Black Clay is a finish that does something most pendant shades cannot — it absorbs light rather than simply deflecting it, which gives the Mullan Kirhii Pendant in Black Clay a presence in a room that is as much about what it holds back as what it lets through. The shade is formed by hand in the ceramics studio at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, with the deep matte black clay finish applied individually to every piece before being fired in the on-site kiln. The surface carries a natural texture and variation that comes directly from the clay and the hand forming process, and that quality is entirely absent from any mass produced fitting.
Mullan Lighting was established in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village and established a ceramics studio within it that now employs over 100 craftspeople. The ceramics collection was designed to reflect the heritage of the village and its surrounding landscape in County Monaghan, with each finish developed to translate a particular aspect of that environment into a glaze. The black clay finish draws from the deep, organic darkness of peat bog and rich Irish soil, giving it an earthiness that feels both ancient and contemporary. Mullan exports to more than 55 countries and its ceramic lights are found in some of the world's most admired interiors.
The Kirhii Black Clay pendant is at its most powerful above a dining table or kitchen island, where the deep shade creates contrast against lighter ceilings and walls while the warm bulb light emerges from below in a focused and atmospheric pool. It is also a striking choice in a living room or hallway where you want a pendant with genuine visual authority. The black clay finish is exceptionally versatile, working with virtually any interior palette and lending itself particularly well to spaces with pale walls, natural timber, polished concrete and warm or cool metal hardware.
