Black Clay and IP44 for a Bathroom with Real Depth
The Kirhii Pendant in Black Clay is a wide, low IP44 bathroom pendant, 13.7cm tall and 27cm wide, with a ceramic shade finished in a deep matte black clay glaze. Rather than reflecting light back into the room the way a glossy surface would, black clay absorbs it, so the shade reads as a solid, grounded form above the glow of the glass diffuser beneath it. Formed and finished by hand at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, the surface carries the natural texture and tonal variation of hand applied clay, which gives it a depth that a moulded or painted fitting cannot replicate.
How It Works
The Kirhii is supplied with a glass diffuser, which provides the IP44 rating and softens the E27 bulb's light into an even glow directed down and outward into the room. Above it, the black clay ceramic body stays dark and matte even when lit, so the fitting reads as a strong, sculptural silhouette against a bathroom ceiling. It is compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs, giving full control over brightness for a bathroom that needs to move between bright and relaxed lighting.
Where It Works Best
Above a freestanding bath, the Kirhii Black Clay creates a striking, low profile focal point that gives the room a designed, considered feel rather than a purely functional one. In a shower room or wet room, particularly one finished in pale stone, limewash plaster or dark tile, the contrast between the black clay ceramic and its surroundings gives the space real visual weight. Because it is rated for Zone 2, it can be positioned within the area beyond 0.6m from the edge of a bath or shower.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, into a working ceramics studio. Black clay draws its character from the deep, peaty darkness of the local soil, translated into a glaze by ceramicist Stephen Kieran as part of a collection developed to reflect the landscape surrounding the village. More than 100 craftspeople now work at Mullan Village, and every piece is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, with finished lights exported to more than 55 countries.

Which bathroom zone is this rated for?
The Kirhii Pendant is IP44 rated for Zone 2, the area beyond 0.6m from the edge of a bath or shower where protection against water splashing from any direction is required. It is not suitable for Zone 0 or Zone 1. Please check with your installer if you are unsure which zone applies.
Can I use this above a freestanding bath?
Yes, provided the installation point falls within Zone 2. Your NICEIC electrician will confirm the exact zone based on the position of the bath and the proposed hanging point.
Will the black clay finish look the same on every pendant?
Close, but not identical. It is a hand applied glaze, so subtle variation in tone and texture between pieces is part of its handmade character.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
