Ten arms, one sweeping shape

Mitzi's Brigitte draws ten slender arms out from a central column, each one curving away before dipping down to its own point of light, so the whole fixture reads as one continuous, sweeping form rather than ten separate lights bolted together. Spanning more than 80cm across, it's the kind of piece many would call a genuine statement, built to be the first thing you notice in a room rather than something that blends into the ceiling.

Aged brass finish

Rather than a bright polish that looks like a mirror, the aged brass finish on the Brigitte has a warmer, slightly weathered quality, closer to old brass hardware that's been handled and polished for years than anything fresh off a production line. At this scale, that softness does a lot of work. Ten arms in a harder, shinier finish could tip into flashy, but the aged brass settles the whole piece, so it comes across as characterful rather than showy.

How it works

Built in steel with that aged brass finish, the Brigitte takes ten E12 candelabra bulbs (B11 shape, 60W each, bulbs not included), giving it enough scale to properly light a tall or open space, or to be dimmed down for something softer. It measures around 61cm high and 80.6cm across, and weighs approximately 8.2kg. The fixture hangs on an adjustable chain and wire, supplied at about 137cm, so the drop height can be set anywhere from roughly 77.5cm up to 202cm depending on the ceiling.

Where it works best

Given its size, the Brigitte suits spaces with genuine height and room to spare, an entrance hall with a tall ceiling, the void above a staircase, or above a long dining table in an open living space. In a smaller room with lower ceilings, ten arms spreading to 80cm wide are more likely to feel cramped than to have the impact the design is going for.

Mitzi takes its name from the founder's grandmother, a painter who spent years tracking down antiques with a sharp eye for something worth having that hadn't been marked up to match. That same instinct now runs through three generations of the family that still owns the business, based in New York's Hudson Valley, and it shapes what they set out to do: make lighting with genuine character something far more people can actually bring home, rather than a look reserved for the few who can pay a premium for it.

• Ten bulbs and around 8.2kg of steel and fittings mean the ceiling point needs to be a proper joist or ceiling rose rated to take the weight, not just plasterboard.
• Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
