A Stainless Steel Recessed Uplighter With a 26º Beam
The LuxR Modux 4 Recessed Dark Light is a very small low voltage outdoor uplighter that sits flush in a surface. The brand states it typically produces 170 lumens. The light source is a 4 watt Cree LED with a CRI of 90 plus, and the beam angle is 26º.
Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel
This version is precision machined in marine grade 316 stainless steel, a metal made for outdoor use in rain, frost and coastal air. It keeps a clean silver look that sits well in paving, decking and contemporary planting. For a warmer finish that ages over time, the same dark light is also made in copper.
Choose Your Colour Temperature
- 2200K: a very warm, candle like glow.
- 2700K and 3000K: warm white, kind to planting, brick and timber.
- 4000K: a crisper neutral white that suits modern stone and steel.
How It Works
The fitting is recessed flush into a surface using a 43.5mm cut out and points its light upwards. The fitting runs on low voltage, so it needs a suitable constant current driver, which is not included, and it is wired in series. It is dimmable when paired with a suitable dimmable driver. The LED can be replaced or swapped for a colour LED, and the optic can be changed to alter the beam width.
Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting should be installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Where It Works Best
Use it to uplight a tree trunk, a wall or a feature from a lawn, a gravel bed or a paved area, anywhere you want the light without a fitting standing in view. The narrow 26º beam suits a single subject. The same design is also available in M2 and Micro sizes.

What is a recessed dark light?
It is an uplighter fitted flush into the ground or another surface, so you see the light but very little of the fitting.
Does it come with a driver?
No. It is a low voltage fitting and needs a suitable constant current driver, sold separately. A dimmable driver lets you dim the light. We recommend a registered electrician installs it.
Is the stainless steel suitable for outdoors?
Yes. It is marine grade 316 stainless steel, chosen for outdoor use, and the fitting is rated IP68.
What size hole does it need?
The cut out size is 43.5mm. The fitting comes with 1m of cable.
Can I change the LED later?
