The Cosmic Orion strings a steady line of warm white light across a patio, pergola or garden wall, built as a straightforward mains powered festoon set rather than a solar or battery version. Ten lamps sit evenly along five metres of cable, close enough together that the whole run glows rather than just the odd bright point.
Setting Up Your Power
Orion runs on a 12V low voltage system rather than plugging straight into a mains socket, so a compatible 12V transformer is needed to power it and is sold separately. One transformer can run up to six Orion sets, which makes it straightforward to extend a run along a longer wall or fence by adding further sets to the same power supply rather than buying a transformer for every string.
How It Works
Ten lamp holders are spaced every 50cm along the 5m run, each fitted with a shatterproof 0.4W warm white LED lamp at 2700K, 4W in total across the whole string. The input and output cable at each end runs to about 25cm, with each lamp hanging around 21cm below the main cable. Colour rendering is rated at Ra83, keeping surfaces lit underneath looking close to their true daylight colour.
Where It Works Best
Being a fixed mains powered set rather than solar, Orion suits spots that already have power run to them, gardens, patios, pergolas and outdoor seating areas near the house, where a permanent connection is more practical than relying on a solar panel and battery. The warm 2700K tone keeps evenings feeling relaxed rather than clinical.
