A Low Level Path Light That Lights the Ground, Not Your Eyes
The Hunza Verge is a compact low level path light built to wash light sideways across paving, decking and lawn edges without glare or upward spill. The LED sits behind an integrated glare guard inside a slim rectangular housing, so after dark you see the lit surface underfoot rather than the fitting itself. This is the PureLED version, wired in series through a remote constant current driver, which is the way we wire most of the Hunza fittings in our own garden lighting schemes.
Powder Coated Aluminium in Nine Colours
The body is CNC machined from low copper content aluminium and finished in a UV resistant polyester powder coat, in a choice of nine colours: matt black, matt bronze, matt dark grey, corten, matt olive green, matt silver star, matt white, fine silver and matt white birch. The lit slot is glazed with 10mm extra clear low iron glass, which Hunza covers with a lifetime warranty. The housing measures 115mm wide, 47mm high and 59mm deep, small enough to tuck into a border or sit beside a step without becoming a feature in its own right.
Surface Mount or Spike Mount
Choose the mounting type from the selector. The Surface Mount version fixes to concrete, paving, decking and other solid surfaces through a base plate, and stands 54mm tall including the plate. The Spike Mount version has a ground spike that pushes straight into soil, planting beds or lawn with no fixing required, and measures 137mm from the tip of the spike to the top of the housing. The spike version is easy to lift and move as planting matures.
How It Works
- A factory fitted Cree XHP-50-2 LED board delivers 85 lumens at 350mA (2W), or a higher 4W output when driven at 700mA. The board is plug and play, so it can be replaced in the field if ever needed rather than replacing the whole fitting.
- Wired in series on a constant current circuit. It needs a separate constant current driver, which is not supplied, and each fitting has a forward voltage of 6V.
- Dimmable when wired to a suitable dimmable constant current driver.
- Available in 2200K, 2700K, 3000K and 4000K colour temperatures, with a colour rendering index of 90 or above.
- Rated IP66 against dust and driving rain, with a 50,000 hour LED life at L70.
- Hunza specifies that the low voltage cable is run in flexible conduit and joined with waterproof adhesive lined heat shrink connections.
- Moonlight Design recommends that all outdoor lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Where It Works Best
The Verge is at its best along the edge of a path, a flight of garden steps or a terrace, where you want to see where you are walking without a row of bright points in your eye line. Spaced along a gravel walk or set at the edge of a deck, it lays a soft band of light across the surface and leaves the garden beyond in shadow. The Spike Mount version suits lawns and planting beds, while the Surface Mount version is the one for patios, decking and hard landscaping.
Designed and Made in New Zealand
Hunza has designed and hand assembled outdoor lighting in Auckland, New Zealand for over 30 years, according to the brand, and the Verge is one of its newest PureLED fittings. The replaceable LED board, machined aluminium body and lifetime glass lens are typical of the way Hunza builds fittings to be serviced rather than thrown away.
Garden Lighting Schemes by Moonlight Design
Moonlight Design has supplied and installed Hunza lighting since the company was founded in 2003, and we design complete garden lighting schemes around it. You can see how we plan and install Hunza schemes on our Design Service page.
Good to Know
- Requires a constant current driver, which is not included. A 350mA driver runs the Verge at 2W and a 700mA driver at 4W.
- The Cree LED board is built in, so there is no separate bulb to buy.
- Weight: 0.55kg for the Surface Mount and 0.65kg for the Spike Mount.
- Colours marked Non-Returnable in the colour selector cannot be returned once ordered.
- Colours shown are for guidance only. Physical colour swatches are available on request.
- Backed by Hunza's 5 year warranty on both the aluminium body and the electronics. Third party drivers are not covered.
- Do not pressure wash the fitting or clean it with bleach, solvents or abrasives. Near the coast, rinse it with fresh water regularly to stop salt building up on the finish.
Questions People Ask
What is the Hunza Verge?
The Hunza Verge is a low level LED path light in powder coated aluminium, 115mm wide and 47mm high, that spreads light horizontally across the ground through a glazed slot with a built in glare guard. It is made for lighting paths, steps and terrace edges without glare or upward light spill.
Does the Hunza Verge need a driver?
Yes. The PureLED version runs on a constant current circuit and needs a separate constant current driver, wired in series. A 350mA driver gives 2W and 85 lumens per fitting, and a 700mA driver gives 4W. The driver is not included.
Can the Hunza Verge be dimmed?
Yes, the PureLED Verge can be dimmed when it is wired to a suitable dimmable constant current driver. On a non dimmable driver it runs at a fixed output.
What is the difference between the Surface Mount and Spike Mount versions?
The Surface Mount Verge screws down to a solid surface such as paving, concrete or decking through a base plate and stands 54mm tall. The Spike Mount Verge has a ground spike that pushes into soil or lawn with no fixings, and stands 137mm from spike tip to top. The lit housing is the same on both.
Which colour temperature should I choose?
2200K is the warmest, close to candlelight, 2700K is a classic warm white, 3000K is slightly crisper and 4000K is a cool white. For most domestic gardens we specify 2700K or 3000K.
Is this the same as the 12V Hunza Verge?
No. This is the series wired PureLED version, run from a constant current driver. The 12V AC version has a driver built into the fitting, is wired in parallel from a 12V transformer and is listed as a separate product.
