A square edged eyelid step light in marine grade stainless steel, with Hunza's integrated Pure LED engine
This is the Pure LED version of Hunza's square hood eyelid step light. In place of a separate MR16 or GU10 lamp, it has Hunza's own Cree LED chip built in, still hidden behind the same solid metal eyelid hood that throws light down onto the step or path below. The square backplate gives it a crisper, more architectural line than the round flange used on the standard Solid Eyelid.
316 stainless steel, built for coastal and hard wearing settings
The flange, eyelid and recessed body are machined from 316 marine grade stainless steel, finished with a brushed look. It's one of two true solid metal finishes Hunza offers on this fitting, alongside solid copper, rather than a plated or coated surface. Hunza notes it can pick up a light surface tarnish in some environments, and recommends washing it occasionally to keep it looking its best.
How It Works
- The square flange is 88mm wide and 7mm deep, over a recessed body 63.5mm in diameter and 68.5mm long, needing a 63.5mm cut out. Supplied with a 1m cable.
- The eyelid projects 25mm and masks around two thirds of the lamp face, sending light down and forward across the tread.
- The Cree LED chip runs at 600 lumens (6 watts) with a colour rendering index of 90+, and is user serviceable rather than sealed for life.
- It's rated IP67, a step up from the IP66 rating on Hunza's standard halogen ready and GU10 versions.
- Pure LED fittings are wired in series and need a remote LED driver rather than a transformer, sold separately. It's dimmable if a suitable dimmable driver is used.
- This fitting can be specified with a choice of colour temperature (2200K, 2700K, 3000K or 4000K) and beam angle (15°, 25°, 38° or 60°) at the time of order.
- The same fitting is also available with a conventional replaceable MR16 low voltage lamp or a GU10 mains lamp. The round flange Solid Eyelid is also available in stainless steel, if you'd prefer that profile.
Where It Works Best
- Coastal gardens and exposed sites, where 316 stainless steel copes with salt air better than most finishes.
- Steps, stair risers and retaining walls where a long life light source is preferred over a replaceable lamp.
- Marking any change of level safely, from a single step to a full staircase.
- Commercial or architectural schemes where a precise, square edge suits the design better than a round eyelid.
Our own installations
The in situ photographs on this page are genuinely Moonlight Design's own designs and installations, not stock photography. They show the round profile Hunza eyelid step light rather than this square hood Pure LED version, since we don't yet have our own square hood installation shots. The fixing and light output are the same across both profiles, so they're still a fair guide to how this style of fitting looks once recessed and lit.
Good to Know
- Usually ships within 2 to 3 days. If out of stock, allow 3 to 5 weeks.
- Returns accepted within 14 days if unused, uninstalled and in original packaging.
- The Cree LED chip is built in, so there's no separate lamp to buy, but it needs a compatible remote LED driver, sold separately.
- Carries a 10 year warranty on the fitting and 5 years on the LED itself.
- Moonlight Design recommends having all outdoor lighting installed and connected by a registered NICEIC electrician.
- Wash occasionally in exposed locations to prevent surface tarnish building up.
Questions People Ask
Is this suitable for a coastal garden?
Yes. 316 stainless steel is a marine grade specifically chosen for salt air resistance, alongside the IP67 rating on this Pure LED version.
Is it dimmable?
Yes, if run from a suitable dimmable LED driver. It won't dim on a standard transformer.
What colour temperature options are there?
You can specify 2200K, 2700K, 3000K or 4000K at the time of order, with a beam angle of 15°, 25°, 38° or 60°.
How is this different to the halogen ready low voltage version?
This Pure LED version has a built in Cree LED chip wired in series with a remote driver, rather than a replaceable MR16 lamp wired in parallel from a transformer. It also carries a higher IP67 rating.
