Five opal glass globes sit in a ring around this Hollis chandelier, finished in Heritage Brass and designed to sit close to the ceiling rather than hang on a long drop. It is a generously sized piece, spanning 81.3cm across, so it makes a real statement in the room even with very little drop below the ceiling.

Heritage Brass and opal glass

The steel frame carries a Heritage Brass finish, a warm, slightly aged gold tone that suits traditional and transitional schemes alike. Each of the five arms holds an opal glass globe, a soft, milky glass that diffuses the light rather than showing the bulb directly. Together they pair well with dark paintwork, panelled walls or other brass fittings in the same room.

How it works

This chandelier takes 5 x E14 bulbs, which are not supplied, so you will need to add five to your order. It works with dimmable bulbs if you want to dim the light, though the fitting itself does not include a dimmer switch. The semi-flush design means it sits directly against the ceiling, which suits rooms with restricted headroom. This fitting is Class I, which means it needs a properly earthed electrical connection. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where it works best

With an IP44 rating, this chandelier is suitable for bathroom use in zones 2 and the outside zone, under the bathroom lighting zones and regulations. Its low profile also suits a hallway, landing or dining room with a lower ceiling, where a pendant with a long drop would not work.

The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley began in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley started an outdoor lantern business in Cleveland, Ohio, with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. When Phil became ill with tuberculosis in the mid-1930s, he sold half the business to Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, who bought the remaining half in 1937 after Phil's death and moved his family to Cleveland to run the company. The Wiedemer family has led Hinkley through four generations since, including Stanley's grandson Rick, who joined in 1969 for a career spanning fifty years. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK market, converting fittings like this Hollis chandelier to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification, which is how a compact, semi-flush design like this one ends up suited to a British ceiling.
