The Tilt table lamp gets its name from the way its drum shade sits slightly off centre on its stand, a small deliberate imperfection that sets it apart from a standard symmetrical lamp. The shade is built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut in tight, layered patterns and hand assembled with a non toxic adhesive. Once the bulb is on, the cuts let light escape in flickers and stripes across the surface, so the lamp reads as sculptural even before it is switched on. This natural finish version keeps the cardboard in its raw kraft colour, so the material itself, not a paint or dye, does the work.

The Natural Kraft Finish

Left undyed, the cardboard shows its own colour and grain, a warm honey brown with visible ridges from the corrugation underneath. No two lamps come out quite the same, since the pattern is cut from reclaimed board rather than a uniform sheet, so expect small variations in tone and texture from one lamp to the next. The base and stem are black powder coated steel, a plain, quiet frame that lets the shade stay the visual focus. It suits rooms built around warm woods, linen, leather and other natural materials, where a glossy or brightly coloured lamp would feel out of place.

How It Works

The Tilt is a plug in table lamp, so there is no wiring to arrange. It comes with a 2.5m black fabric cord and an inline switch, and simply plugs into a standard wall socket. It takes 1 x 15W max E27 LED bulb, not supplied, and is dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmable LED. It is designed for indoor use only.

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which the Tilt belongs to, began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to build lighting for a sustainable design competition and found the material worked far better than either of them expected.
