The Sun 48 is Graypants at its most theatrical, a sunburst of laser cut cardboard rays radiating out from a central glass diffuser. In this Natural finish, every ray keeps the pale, honeyed tone of the reclaimed cardboard itself, rather than being painted or stained. It is also a genuinely large fixture, 108cm in height and 128cm in diameter, the largest size in the Sun range, so it is built for a room with height and space to let it read as a full sunburst rather than a shape you catch from an angle.

Natural Cardboard, Left Honest

Each ray is cut from recycled corrugated cardboard and left in its natural colour, so you see the warm brown tone and visible corrugation of the material rather than a painted surface. Because the rays are cut and assembled by hand, expect small variations from one ray to the next and from one pendant to another; that is part of the material, not a flaw. It pairs naturally with timber floors, exposed brick and other raw, textured materials, and works as a warm counterpoint in a room built around cooler surfaces like concrete or steel.

How It Works

Light comes from a central glass diffuser set inside the ring of cardboard rays, which spreads a soft, even glow outward and lets each ray cast its own shadow. Inside sit six E27 lamp holders, each taking an LED bulb of up to 15W. Bulbs are not supplied, so you will need to source six compatible E27 LED bulbs separately. The fitting is dimmable if you use dimmable E27 LED bulbs with a compatible dimmer switch. The pendant is suspended on a 2m black fabric cord from a small black powder coated canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter. A 5m cord is available, please enquire if you need more drop. It is a hardwired fitting, so it should be installed, and its drop set, by a qualified electrician. It carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty.

Where It Works Best

Given its scale, the Sun 48 works best somewhere with real ceiling height, a double height stairwell, a hotel or restaurant atrium, or above a dining table under a high ceiling, where its full 128cm spread can be read from across the room. Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection that the Sun 48 belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to build a lighting fixture for a sustainable design competition, and found the material's texture and shadow play was worth developing into its own product line.
