A Faceted Wall Sconce Built From Layered Cardboard

The Skew 15 takes the Scraplights technique and turns it sideways, into a faceted wall shade built up from dozens of individual layers of recycled corrugated cardboard. Each layer is laser cut, then bonded together by hand, before the finished shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. Left in its natural kraft tone, it is a genuinely distinctive alternative to a standard wall light, with a raw, ridged surface that most glass or fabric fittings simply cannot give you.

The Natural Kraft Finish

In this natural finish, the cardboard keeps its own colour rather than being painted or stained, so the corrugation stays visible layer by layer across the whole shade. The tone sits somewhere between warm brown and soft bronze, and because each shade is hand cut and hand assembled rather than machine pressed, expect small variations from one piece to the next. It sits well against exposed brick or timber panelling, and pairs naturally with other raw materials like unfinished wood, leather and matt black metal.

How It Works

The Skew 15 is a hardwired wall sconce, wired directly into the wall by a qualified electrician rather than plugged in. It takes 2 x 5W max E14 LED bulbs, which are not supplied, so you will need to source these separately. Fit it with a dimmable LED bulb on a compatible dimmer switch and you can dim the fitting to adjust the strength of the glow. Once switched on, the layered cardboard filters the bulb's light into a warm amber wash while throwing crisp geometric shadows across the surrounding wall.

Cardboard by Accident, Cardboard by Design

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which the Skew 15 belongs to, began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and ended up building a light fitting out of leftover cardboard packaging. That original idea became the reclaimed cardboard construction every Scraplights shade still uses today.
