A Folded Cardboard Sconce With Warm, Honeyed Light

The Skew 15 wall sconce turns hand cut layers of cardboard into a faceted wall piece, its angled planes stepping out from the wall like folded architecture rather than a single curved shade. This is the Blonde finish, a paler, sun bleached cardboard tone that softens the collection's usual kraft brown and lets the light spilling through the corrugation read warmer and more honeyed. At 25cm high, 38cm wide and 10cm deep, it works as a piece of sculptural wall art as much as a light source.

The Blonde Finish

Each shade is built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, cut into precise facets by laser and then hand layered and bonded with non toxic adhesive, before being treated with a non toxic fire retardant. In Blonde, the cardboard is left in its lightest natural tone, so the grain and cut edges of each layer catch the light rather than disappearing into a darker shade. It reads well against pale plaster, white or light timber walls, and pairs naturally with linen, raw oak and other pared back, natural materials.

How It Works

The Skew 15 is hardwired and fixed directly to the wall, so it needs to be installed by a qualified electrician rather than plugged in. It takes 2 x E14 LED bulbs, each rated up to 5W maximum, and bulbs are not supplied. Fitted with a compatible dimmable LED bulb, it can be used on a dimmer circuit. Most of what you see lit is the shadow pattern the folded layers cast, rather than a direct view of the bulb itself.

Where It Works Best

Its scale and soft glow suit living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and kitchens, anywhere a wall light is used for atmosphere rather than task lighting. It works well as a pair either side of a doorway or sofa, or on its own as a textural feature on an otherwise plain wall, and suits interiors styled in a contemporary, pared back or biophilic direction.

The Story Behind Scraplights

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, of which the Skew 15 is part, began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and started experimenting with leftover cardboard rather than buying new material. That original idea, layers of reclaimed cardboard cut and shaped to filter light, is still how every Scraplight is made today.
