The Oliv pendant in White is a compact, barrel shaped Scraplight, 19cm in diameter, built from layers of reclaimed corrugated cardboard. Where Graypants' other Oliv finishes are laser cut, this White version is knife cut by hand, a technique the brand reserves for its palest shades to keep the cardboard's surface clean and crisp rather than heavily textured. Switched on, it filters a single bulb into a soft, amber tinted glow and throws the collection's signature intricate shadow play across ceilings and walls.

Knife Cut White, Hand Finished

Each Oliv White shade starts as reclaimed corrugated cardboard, hand cut with a knife rather than a laser to keep the pale finish neat and free of scorch marks. The result is a fine, woven looking surface in a quiet, near white tone that reads calmly against light walls rather than drawing attention to itself. It pairs comfortably with pale oak, linen, brushed nickel or matt white fittings, and suits a Scandinavian, Japandi or otherwise pared back scheme. Because every shade is cut and assembled by hand, expect gentle, natural variation in the surface pattern from one pendant to the next.

How It Works

The Oliv White is a hardwired ceiling pendant, hung on a 2m white fabric cord from a small round canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in white powder coated steel (a 5m cord is available, please enquire). It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W LED maximum, which is not supplied, so you can choose your own brightness and colour temperature. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings; with a standard, non dimmable bulb it will simply run at full brightness. It is ready for a qualified electrician to hardwire at your chosen drop, and the shade is bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant throughout.

Where It Works Best

At 19cm across, the Oliv White suits spots where a smaller, quieter pendant works better than a large centrepiece: beside a bed, in a hallway or over a stairwell, or clustered in twos or threes above a dining table. It also works well as a single accent in a living room or dining room, where its shadow pattern becomes part of the room's character rather than its main feature.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Oliv belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
