A Warm Glow Cut From Reclaimed Cardboard

The Oliv pendant in Natural is Graypants' idea of everyday cardboard made beautiful. Reclaimed corrugated board is left in its raw, undyed tone, cut into interlocking layers and hand assembled into a compact 19cm shade. Lit, it filters light into a soft amber glow and throws layered shadows across the walls and ceiling around it. No two shades stack in quite the same way, so the one that arrives is genuinely one of a kind.

The Natural Cardboard Finish

This is the undyed version of the Oliv shade, so the corrugated texture and the paper's own warm brown tone are left fully visible rather than covered with paint or stain. The layered edges of the board create a rough, honest texture that catches light differently from every angle. It suits rooms built around natural materials nearby, such as timber, linen, leather and raw plaster, and sits comfortably in a scheme built around warm, organic tones rather than sharp contrast.

How It Works

• The pendant is hardwired, not plug in, and is supplied with a 2m black fabric cord and a round canopy finished in black powder coat (a 5m cord is available, please enquire).
• It takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W, which is not supplied. Fit a compatible dimmable LED if you want the light on a dimmer.
• Because it is hardwired, installation needs a qualified electrician. Please arrange professional installation rather than fitting it yourself.
• The shade is built from hand assembled layers of reclaimed cardboard bonded with a non-toxic adhesive, which keeps it light at around 0.5kg.

Where It Works Best

At 19cm across, the Oliv is one of the smaller pieces in the Scraplights range, so it works well on its own above a bedside table, a desk or a small dining spot, and just as well grouped in twos or threes over a kitchen island or along a hallway. It suits anyone who wants warm, textural light in a living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway or staircase, and who likes a shade that looks handmade because it is.

Designed and Made By Graypants

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, which the Oliv belongs to, began almost by accident, when the pair built an early lighting piece from leftover cardboard for a sustainable design competition and the material stuck. It is now the studio's original and defining product line, still hand assembled by craftspeople across Graypants' studios.

• Comes with a 2m black fabric cord as standard; a 5m cord is available, please enquire.
• Keep it in dry indoor locations only. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or a low suction vacuum brush and avoid water or damp cleaning, as this can damage the cardboard.
• Carries a 2 year warranty and CE safety certification.
• Each shade is hand assembled, so slight variation in the layering and texture between pieces is normal and part of the material's character.

Questions People Ask

• Is the bulb included? No. The Oliv takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED if you would like it to work with a dimmer switch.
• Can I install this myself? No. This pendant is hardwired rather than plug in, so it needs to be fitted by a qualified electrician.
• Will every Oliv pendant look identical? No. Each shade is hand assembled from layered cardboard, so the exact pattern of the layers varies slightly from piece to piece. This is a natural result of the handmade process, not a fault.
