The Oliv pendant takes its name from its shape, an elongated, rounded silhouette that echoes an olive rather than the flatter dome and disc shapes found elsewhere in Graypants' Scraplights range. In Blonde, the shade keeps the cardboard's own honeyed, golden tone, laser cut into layered rings and hand assembled at Graypants' Pacific Northwest or Amsterdam studio. At 19cm in diameter, it is a compact fixture that works equally well hung alone or clustered in twos or threes.

Blonde: The Cardboard's Own Honeyed Tone

Blonde is Graypants' most natural cardboard finish, left in its own warm, honey colour rather than stained or darkened. Every ring is laser cut, bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, then hand assembled into Oliv's rounded silhouette. The layered rings catch light unevenly across the curved surface, giving the shade a soft, textured grain rather than a flat, uniform one. It sits comfortably alongside light oak, linen, rattan and other natural materials, and reads well in a Scandinavian or Japandi scheme.

How It Works

The Oliv shade is hardwired to the ceiling on a 2m white fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on request, please enquire. It hangs from a small round canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in white powder coating. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W LED maximum, which is not supplied, so you can choose the exact brightness and colour temperature yourself. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you would like to bring the light down for evenings; a standard, non dimmable bulb will simply run at full brightness. As a hardwired fitting, installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Because of its compact scale, the Oliv suits spots where a larger pendant would feel like too much: as a bedside light, in a hallway, above a small side table, or grouped in twos or threes over a dining table or kitchen island. It works equally well in a living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway or stairwell, wherever you want a single warm point of light rather than a bright, even wash.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection that Oliv belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, discovering that layered, laser cut rings could filter light in a way few other materials do. Every Oliv shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings today, across Graypants' studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
