A Statement Ring of Layered Cardboard

The Ohio 32 is the largest silhouette in Graypants' Ohio design, a wide rounded pendant built from hundreds of thin rings of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut and stacked into a single glowing form. It is also a genuinely large fixture, with a shade measuring 33cm high and 82cm across, so it reads as a real presence in a room rather than a supporting piece. A glass diffuser sits inside the ring, softening the single light source before the cardboard shell takes over and casts its own soft, layered shadow across ceilings and walls.

The Natural Finish

This is the natural, undyed version of the Ohio 32, so the raw cardboard is left exactly as it comes off the roll rather than stained or dyed. Every ring shows its own grain, colour shift and edge texture, running from pale straw tones through to deeper amber brown. Because the material is handled and hand assembled rather than machine finished to a uniform look, no two Ohio 32 pendants are quite identical. It suits interiors already leaning warm and natural, sitting well against timber, linen, stone and other raw materials rather than a cool, polished scheme.

How It Works

Light comes from three E27 LED lamps, each up to 15W, fitted inside the shade (bulbs are not supplied). The glass diffuser evens out the light before it reaches the cardboard shell, so the glow is soft rather than harsh and the shadow pattern reads clearly on the ceiling. The pendant is hardwired and hangs from a black fabric cord on a small black powder coated canopy plate, 2.5cm high and 10cm across. The cord supplied is 2m, and a 5m length is available on request. Because this is a hardwired ceiling fitting, it must be installed by a qualified electrician, who will also set the final drop height to suit your ceiling.

Where It Works Best

Its scale makes the Ohio 32 best suited to rooms with the space and ceiling height to let it hang properly clear of head height: over a dining table, above a kitchen island, in a stairwell or double height hallway, or as a lobby centrepiece in a hotel, restaurant or office reception. It works equally well as a single striking pendant over a table or repeated in a small group along a run of ceiling.

About Graypants

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which the Ohio design belongs to, began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to build a lighting prototype for a sustainable design competition and found the material's texture and shadow play was worth developing into a product in its own right.
