The Nest 32 is one of Graypants' Scraplights, built from layers of knife cut, reclaimed corrugated cardboard, hand assembled into an open, woven lattice. Lit, it throws a shifting pattern of shadow across the room rather than a single clean beam. This is the White version, a cool, pale finish that reads crisp and graphic rather than warm, at 33cm in diameter, ideal wherever the fitting is meant to be seen as much as felt.

The White Finish

Where the natural toned Scraplights shades keep the warm colour of raw cardboard, this Nest 32 is finished in a cool, pale white. The ridges and layered edges of the reclaimed cardboard stay visible in the texture, but the overall look sits close to white walls and pared back interiors rather than standing out against them. It pairs well with black metal fittings, pale timber and other muted, natural materials nearby.

How It Works

The shade measures 85cm in height and 33cm in diameter, suspended on a 2m white fabric cord from a small, white powder coated canopy (2.5cm high, 10cm diameter). A 5m cord is available if you need a longer drop, please enquire. It takes one E27 bulb up to 15W, not included, and works well with a dimmable LED and a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down to a soft glow. This is a hardwired fitting, so it should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

The Nest 32 suits any space where there's room to look up at it: over a dining table, in a stairwell, above a bed, or hung alone in a hallway or living room as a sculptural piece. Because the light filters through the woven cardboard rather than shining straight out, it works best where you want atmosphere and texture rather than strong task lighting.

Where Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection started almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned leftover cardboard into a lighting fixture. That original idea, cardboard cut and layered into sculptural shades, is still how every Scraplights pendant is made today.

• The shade is finished with a non-toxic adhesive. Dust it gently rather than wiping with a wet cloth, and keep it away from damp rooms and open flame.
• Standard drop is a 2m white fabric cord. A 5m cord is available on request if you need a longer drop.
• Comes with a 2 year warranty and CE certification.
