A Sculptural Nest Woven From Recycled Cardboard

Hang the Nest 32 in Natural over a dining table or in a reading corner and it becomes a piece of sculpture before the bulb is even switched on. Its open, spiralling weave of recycled corrugated cardboard casts long, irregular shadows across walls and table settings alike. Measuring 33cm across, it reads as a substantial, distinctive shape without overwhelming a room, and each shade is laser cut and hand assembled, so the exact pattern of light it throws is never quite repeated twice.

The Natural Finish, Warm and Undyed

This is the Natural colourway, meaning the cardboard is left in its own undyed tone rather than tinted or stained. The corrugated layers show their raw texture from every angle, with warm caramel and toffee striations that shift as you move around the piece or as the light inside it changes. It sits comfortably alongside oak furniture, linen upholstery, rattan and other organic, textural materials, and suits organic modern, Scandinavian and biophilic interiors particularly well.

How It Works

The Nest 32 is a hardwired ceiling pendant with a fabric cord and a round canopy, intended for indoor, dry locations only. The canopy is 10cm in diameter and 2.5cm high in a black powder coated finish, and it comes fitted with a 2m black fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on request. Inside the shade is one E27 medium base socket, taking a single E27 LED bulb of 15W or less, which is not supplied. Pair it with a dimmable LED and a compatible dimmer switch if you want to dim it. As with any hardwired ceiling fitting, we would always recommend having the Nest 32 installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Given its scale, the Nest 32 works well as a single statement piece above a dining table, a console table or a reading nook, and it also holds its own clustered in twos or threes above a kitchen island or run down a stairwell. Because the shade is open at both ends, it throws a soft, patterned glow up and down rather than a bright, even light, so it suits living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways and stairs where atmosphere and texture matter more than task lighting.

Where the Design Comes From

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection the Nest 32 belongs to began almost by accident, as an entry into a sustainable design competition made from leftover cardboard, which went on to become the studio's signature material and process.
