A Tall Woven Basket of Reclaimed Cardboard

The Nest 32 is the larger of Graypants' two Nest pendants, its shade built from loosely layered strips of reclaimed cardboard that weave together into an open, basket like lattice. In Blonde, the cardboard keeps its own warm, honeyed tone rather than a dyed or painted one. Standing 85cm tall on a 33cm diameter base, it is a noticeably vertical shape for its width, so it reads as a piece of woven sculpture as much as a light fitting, both switched off and glowing.

Blonde: Cardboard Left in Its Own Honeyed Tone

Every strip in this finish is laser cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, then hand assembled and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive before the whole shade is given a non-toxic fire retardant treatment for safe indoor use. Left in Blonde, the cardboard shows its own warm honey and caramel colouring rather than a stained or painted surface, with the open weave letting light spill through the gaps. It suits pale oak, rattan, linen and other natural, warm toned materials, and sits comfortably alongside brass or bronze fittings. Because each shade is woven by hand, no two Nest 32 pendants turn out quite alike.

How It Works

The Nest 32 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, hung on a 2m white fabric cord from a small round canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in white powder coated steel. A 5m cord is available on request if your ceiling needs the extra length. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied, so you can choose the exact brightness yourself. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the glow down for evenings. As a hardwired fitting, it should always be installed, and the drop set, by a qualified electrician. Lit, the woven strips throw a shifting lattice of shadow and amber light across ceilings and walls. The pendant is CE certified, carries a 2 year warranty, and weighs 1kg.

Where It Works Best

Its height gives the Nest 32 room to be appreciated somewhere with a bit of vertical space, over a dining table, above a stairwell where it can be seen from more than one level, or in a hallway with decent ceiling height. The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection the Nest 32 belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered, cut strips of it could hold light and cast shadow in a way few other materials do. That original idea still shapes every Scraplight made today.
