The Nest 24 is the compact version of Graypants' Scraplights Nest pendant, a 24cm diameter shade built from hundreds of laser cut cardboard strips. At this smaller scale the light reads as an intimate glow rather than a statement piece, throwing the same crosshatched shadow pattern across a much tighter, cosier space. It is a pendant built entirely from reclaimed material, finished here in Blonde.

The Warmth of the Blonde Finish

Blonde is the natural, undyed tone of the cardboard itself, a honeyed straw colour that lightens further once the bulb is switched on. Up close you can see the individual laser cut layers stacked into a loose woven lattice, a texture that feels handmade rather than manufactured. It sits comfortably against timber, linen and other natural materials, and works well in Japandi, contemporary or biophilic schemes where a warm, tactile finish matters more than a polished one.

How It Works

Each Nest 24 shade is laser cut from corrugated cardboard, then hand assembled using a non-toxic adhesive and given a fire retardant treatment before it leaves the workshop. It is a hardwired ceiling pendant that takes a single 15W max E27 LED bulb, sold separately. Whether it dims depends on the LED bulb and dimmer switch used together, rather than any dimming control built into the fitting itself. The pendant hangs on a 2m white fabric cord from a small round canopy measuring 2.5cm high by 10cm diameter in white powder coated finish, with a 5m cord available on request. As with any hardwired fitting, it should be installed by a qualified electrician. It is suited to indoor, dry locations only.

The Story Behind Scraplights

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and built their first shades from leftover cardboard rather than buying new material. That original idea, laser cut cardboard turned into a light, is still exactly what the Nest 24 is made from today.
