A Warm Glowing Sphere of Woven Cardboard

The Moon 24 is one of Graypants' most recognisable shapes in the Scraplights range, a full, rounded globe built from layered rings of cardboard cut and bonded by hand. This Blonde version keeps the cardboard close to its natural, honey toned state rather than darkening or dyeing it, so the light filtering through has a paler, warmer cast than the darker finishes in the range. It is also a genuinely large pendant, with a shade measuring 53cm in height and 61cm in diameter, so it reads as a real piece of sculpture as much as a light source, casting a moving lattice of shadow across the ceiling and walls around it.

Hand Layered Blonde Cardboard

Blonde is the most natural of the Moon finishes, a pale, honey toned corrugated cardboard left close to its raw colour rather than treated or darkened. Each ring is laser cut then bonded by hand, so the layered edges catch the light individually rather than blending into one flat surface. Because every shade is assembled by hand, small variations in ring alignment and tone are normal and part of what makes each one genuinely one of a kind, and screens can render the exact warmth of the tone slightly differently from one device to another. It sits comfortably alongside natural materials such as wood, linen and stone, and works just as well as a warm accent against darker, more industrial finishes.

How It Works

The Moon 24 is a hardwired pendant, so it should always be fitted by a qualified electrician. It hangs on a 2m white fabric cord, a 5m cord is available on request, from a round ceiling canopy that measures 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter, finished in white powder coated steel. It takes a single E27 LED bulb rated up to 15W, not supplied. Light filters through the corrugated cardboard layers rather than shining directly outward, and a dimmable LED bulb lets you soften both the glow and the shadow pattern it throws.

Where It Works Best

Its scale and warmth suit a dining table or a living room seating area, where the shadow pattern has room to spread across the ceiling and walls. Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, which the Moon 24 belongs to, began almost by accident, when an early piece made from leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition led to the material becoming the studio's signature. Graypants now works from studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
