A Compact Ring of Raw Cardboard Light

The Moon 10 pendant in Natural takes Graypants' signature ring pattern, laser cut and layered into a rounded shade, and leaves the cardboard in its truest, most unworked state. At 26cm in diameter, it is a compact fixture built for a single confident point of light rather than a big centrepiece, and its raw, undyed tone reads as textural and honest rather than polished.

Natural: Cardboard Left Raw

The Natural finish keeps the cardboard closest to its reclaimed state, the corrugated texture and undyed tone left visible rather than lightened to Blonde or brightened to White. Each ring is laser cut then hand assembled with a non-toxic adhesive, and the finished shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. Because it is hand built, no two Moon 10 shades are ever quite identical, and the raw tone can also read slightly differently from screen to screen. It suits pairing with reclaimed timber, linen and other natural materials, in a Scandinavian, Japandi or otherwise pared back room.

How It Works

The Moon 10 is a hardwired pendant, supplied on a 2m black fabric cord with a small round canopy in black powder coated steel, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter (a 5m cord is available, please enquire). It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied, so you can choose the exact brightness and colour temperature yourself. Fit a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who can set the finished drop to suit your ceiling height at the same time.

Where It Works Best

Its compact size makes the Moon 10 easy to group in twos or threes above a breakfast table or kitchen counter, or hang singly in a study, hallway or bedroom. Lit, the layered rings throw soft, irregular shadows across nearby walls and ceilings, so it suits anywhere you want ambience and texture rather than a bright, even wash.

The Scraplights Story

The Scraplights collection, which the Moon 10 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
