A Softer, Paler Take on the Scraplights Silhouette

The Madison pendant in white takes Graypants' signature layered cardboard silhouette and lightens it right down. Instead of the laser cutting used on the darker Natural and Blonde versions, each ring here is knife cut and finished in white, then hand assembled and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive before the whole shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. The result is a fixture that throws a softer, more evenly diffused glow than its darker siblings, while still tracing the same layered pattern across ceilings and walls.

Bright White, Knife Cut Rather Than Laser Cut

This White finish starts from the same reclaimed corrugated cardboard as every Scraplight, but it is cut by hand with a knife rather than laser cut, giving the surface a slightly softer, less mechanical edge than the darker finishes. Because each ring is cut and assembled by hand, no two Madison pendants in white are ever quite identical. The pale finish sits comfortably against white or light grey walls, pale timber and plaster, and works well alongside brushed brass, matt black or other simple, understated fittings.

How It Works

The Madison is a hardwired ceiling pendant, supplied on a 2m white fabric cord with a small round canopy at the ceiling, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter in a white powder coated finish. A 5m cord is available if you need extra drop, just ask us to enquire on your behalf. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings; with a standard, non dimmable bulb it will run at full brightness only. Because the shade is white rather than natural cardboard, light passes through it more evenly, giving a softer, more diffused glow than the Natural or Blonde versions. This pendant is CE certified and carries a 2 year warranty. Have a qualified electrician handle the installation, since the drop height is set on site to suit your space rather than fixed in advance.

Where It Works Best

Its pale, even glow suits living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways and stairs, anywhere you want a soft wash of light rather than a strong pool of shadow. Hung singly over a bedside table it works as a quiet, sculptural reading light, and over a dining table it gives an even spread of light across the whole surface. It suits Scandinavian, Japandi and other pared back contemporary interiors where a pale, textured shade can sit quietly rather than compete with the room around it.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered, hand cut rings could filter light in a way few other materials do. That original idea is still what the Madison is built from today, now available in Natural, Blonde and this paler White finish.
