A Wide, Low Drum of Cardboard Light

The Madison pendant is one of the wider shapes in Graypants' Scraplights range, a low, drum shaped shade built from layered rings of reclaimed cardboard. In this Natural finish, the cardboard is left in its own undyed kraft brown tone, so the shade keeps the warm, papery texture of the raw material rather than any applied colour. At 56cm in diameter and 34cm in height, it reads as a confident single pendant rather than a small accent.

Natural is the most raw of the Madison's finishes, the corrugated cardboard left exactly as it comes, without stain or dye. Every ring is laser cut, then hand assembled and bonded with a non toxic adhesive by craftspeople at Graypants' Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam studios, before the whole shade is treated with a non toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. Lit, the gaps between the rings throw an intricate lattice of shadow across ceilings and walls. Because each shade is put together by hand, expect gentle variation in tone and ring pattern from one Madison to the next. It sits comfortably alongside light oak, linen, rattan and other natural materials, and works well next to brass or bronze fittings.

How It Works

The Madison is a hardwired pendant, supplied on a 2m black fabric cord with a small round canopy at the ceiling, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in black powder coated steel. A 5m cord is available if you need extra drop, just ask us to enquire on your behalf. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings, with a standard, non dimmable bulb it will run at full brightness only. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who can set the finished drop to suit your ceiling height at the same time. The fitting is CE certified and carries a 2 year warranty, and weighs 1.2kg.

Where It Works Best

Its width and warm, shadow casting glow suit a dining table or kitchen island, where it can anchor the room as a single statement piece. It also works well in a living room, bedroom, hallway or stairwell, anywhere you want ambient light with real texture and character rather than a bright, even wash. It suits Scandinavian, Japandi and other organic modern interiors, for indoor use only.

The Scraplights Story

The Scraplights collection, which the Madison belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
