A Wide Dome of Honeyed Light

The Madison pendant in Blonde is one of the wider shades in Graypants' Scraplights collection, 56cm across and 34cm in height, built from layered rings of reclaimed cardboard that Graypants' makers laser cut and hand assemble one by one. Its Blonde finish is the cardboard's own natural honey tone, lighter and paler than the darker Natural version, so the glow it throws is soft and warm rather than deep amber. Because every shade is put together entirely by hand, no two Madison pendants fall into quite the same pattern.

Blonde Cardboard, Left Honest

Blonde is Graypants' lightest cardboard tone, achieved with no added stain or dye, just reclaimed corrugated board in its own pale, honeyed colour. Each ring is laser cut then bonded by hand with a non-toxic adhesive, and the whole shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. The layered rings keep their raw, ridged edges rather than a smooth finish, so light filters through in a soft, dappled pattern across ceilings and nearby walls. It suits pairing with light oak, rattan, linen and other pale, natural materials, and sits comfortably alongside brass or bronze fittings.

How It Works

The Madison is a hardwired pendant, supplied on a 2m white fabric cord with a small round canopy at the ceiling, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in white powder coating (a 5m cord is available, please enquire). The drop itself is set on site by your electrician when it is installed. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W LED maximum, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings, a standard, non dimmable bulb will run at full brightness only. It is CE certified and carries a 2 year warranty, and weighs 1.2kg.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection the Madison belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered, laser cut rings could filter light in a way few other materials do. That original idea has grown into the studios Graypants now runs across the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam, still hand assembling every shade from individual cardboard rings.
