The Hive 9 is the smallest of the three sizes in Graypants' Scraplights Hive range, just 23cm in diameter. It carries the same honeycombed silhouette as its larger siblings, laser cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, but scaled down for close, intimate spots rather than a big open room. In Blonde, the cardboard's own warm tone filters bulb light into a soft amber glow and throws gentle latticed shadow across nearby walls and ceilings, rather than flooding a room with brightness.

Blonde Cardboard, Honeycombed by Hand

Blonde is Graypants' natural, unstained cardboard tone. Each Hive 9 shade is laser cut into its honeycomb lattice, then hand assembled with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. Because the assembly is done by hand, no two shades are ever quite identical. The warm, paper toned surface sits comfortably with timber, wicker, linen and other natural materials, and works well alongside brass or matte black fittings nearby.

How It Works

The Hive 9 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, hung on a 2m white fabric cord with a small grey powder coated canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, that sits flush to the ceiling. A 5m cord is available on request. The drop itself is set on site by your electrician when it is installed. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the glow down low for evenings.

Where It Works Best

Its small scale makes the Hive 9 well suited to spots where a larger pendant would feel like too much: over a bedside table, tucked into a reading nook, along a hallway or above a stairwell, or grouped in twos and threes above a dining table for a softer, more textured alternative to one large pendant. The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Hive 9 belongs to, began almost by accident, when Graypants entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover corrugated cardboard as their material. That original idea grew into the honeycombed, laser cut shades the studio still makes today. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
