A Cleaner, More Graphic Take on the Hive

The Hive 15 in White is the largest shade in Graypants' Hive range, a honeycombed cardboard pendant measuring 38cm across. Rather than the laser cutting used on the Blonde and Natural Hive shades, this White version is knife cut and finished in white, giving it a crisper, more graphic look while keeping the same faceted honeycomb surface and hand assembled construction.

The White finish sits over the same corrugated cardboard as the rest of the Hive range, but the knife cutting process and white finish give the facets a smoother, more graphic edge than the raw, layered look of Blonde or Natural. Unlit, it reads as a clean sculptural form that suits pale walls, minimal or Scandinavian schemes, and pairs comfortably with light oak, white plaster or matte black fittings. Lit, the honeycomb structure throws a crisp lattice of shadow across ceilings and nearby walls. Because assembly is still done by hand, expect gentle variation in the facets from piece to piece rather than a perfectly uniform surface.

How It Works

Every shade is bonded with non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, so the honeycomb structure is safe to use indoors. The pendant is hardwired to the ceiling, supplied on a 2m white fabric cord with a small round canopy at the top, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter in a grey powder coated finish. A 5m cord is available if you need extra drop, just ask us to enquire on your behalf. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied, and can be dimmed if you fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch. As with any hardwired fitting, installation and the final drop height should be set by a qualified electrician.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection the Hive belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered, cut cardboard could filter light in a way few other materials do. That original idea is still what every Hive shade, including this White version, is built from today.
