The Largest Shade in the Hive Family

The Hive 15 is the largest of Graypants' three Hive pendant sizes, at 38cm in diameter and 46cm in height, and it takes noticeably longer to build by hand than the two smaller shades in the line. Its honeycombed facets of corrugated cardboard are laser cut and pieced together one section at a time until the sphere like form closes. Left in its Natural, uncoated state, it shows the cardboard's own grain and tone rather than a painted or stained finish.

In Natural, the Hive 15 keeps the cardboard exactly as it comes off the roll. No paint, no stain, no coating, just the honeyed brown tone and visible corrugation of the material itself. Every panel is bonded with non toxic adhesive and treated to be fire retardant. Because the shade is built by hand from a natural material, small variations in grain and tone are normal from one piece to the next, so no two Hive 15 pendants are ever quite identical. This finish suits Scandinavian, organic modern and biophilic interiors that lean into honest, visible materials rather than gloss or metal.

How It Works

The Hive 15 is a hardwired ceiling pendant. It comes with a fabric cord (2m of black cord as standard, with 5m available on request) and a black powder coated round canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter. The shade takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W maximum, LED, which is not supplied. It is dimmable when fitted with a compatible dimmable LED bulb. Because it is a mains, hardwired fitting, it should always be installed by a qualified electrician, who will also set the final drop length to suit your ceiling.

Where It Works Best

The size and honeycombed structure make the Hive 15 a genuine centrepiece rather than background lighting. Once lit, it filters bulb light into a warm amber glow and throws an intricate lattice of shadow across ceiling and walls, so it works well hung low over a dining table, in an open stairwell, or as the focal point of a living room or bedroom with enough ceiling height to let the shadow pattern spread. How Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which the Hive 15 belongs to, began almost by accident: the pair entered a sustainable design competition and built their first shade from leftover cardboard they had on hand, and the technique became the basis for the range that followed.
