A Teardrop Built From Thousands of Cardboard Layers

The Hive 15 is a pendant from Graypants' Scraplights collection, built up from many thin layers of laser cut corrugated cardboard, stacked and shaped into a rounded, teardrop form. This is the 38cm size, finished in Blonde. Once lit, the layered surface throws a soft, fine lattice of shadow across ceiling and walls instead of a single bright beam, so the light itself becomes part of the room's texture rather than just a fixture in it.

Blonde: The Natural Colour of the Cardboard Itself

Blonde is the cardboard's own tone, left undyed and unstained. Expect warm honey and biscuit shades, with the ridged texture of the individual layers visible across the surface. Because every shade is laser cut and hand assembled, the grain and tone vary a little from one piece to the next, so no two Hive 15 pendants look quite identical. It sits comfortably with timber, linen and rattan, and pairs well with warm metal fittings such as brass or bronze.

How It Works

• The shade is laser cut from corrugated cardboard, bonded by hand with a non toxic adhesive, then treated with a non toxic fire retardant.
• It is hardwired rather than plug in, and needs to be fitted by a qualified electrician onto the round canopy supplied (grey powder coated, 2.5cm high by 10cm diameter).
• It comes with a 2m white fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on request.
• It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum, and the bulb is not included.
• The fitting itself is a standard bulb holder, so use a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want dimming control.

How Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to build a lighting piece for a sustainable design competition. That original idea, turning a throwaway material into something with real presence, is still the starting point for every Scraplights shade Graypants makes today, including the Hive.
