A Softer, Brighter Take on the Scraplights Silhouette

The Hive 12 pendant is Graypants' honeycombed shade reworked in bright white knife cut cardboard, a lighter counterpoint to the brand's more familiar toffee toned finishes. Each shade measures 36cm high and 30cm in diameter, the mid sized option in the Hive range, easy to hang singly over a table or grouped in a run along a hallway or staircase. Look closely and the facets are quietly irregular, each one cut and assembled by hand rather than by machine, so the surface catches light differently depending on where you stand.

Knife Cut White Cardboard

White is the one Scraplights finish that Graypants knife cuts rather than laser cuts, a slower process that leaves a softer edge on each facet. The corrugated cardboard shade is bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, then hand assembled into the honeycombed pattern that runs across the whole Scraplights family. A small grey powder coated canopy sits at the ceiling, about 2.5cm high and 10cm across. Because the shade is handmade, expect small natural variation piece to piece. It pairs well with pale walls, timber tones and other white or natural finishes rather than sitting as a dark silhouette against the ceiling.

How It Works

The shade fits over a single E27 socket, taking one LED bulb up to 15W that is not included. It is dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmable LED and dimmer switch. Lit, the cardboard filters light through its facets, producing a soft glow by day and a warmer amber wash after dark, with faceted shadow patterns thrown across ceiling and walls. The pendant hangs on 2m of white fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on request, and the drop height is set at installation. This is a hardwired ceiling fitting, so it should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

The 30cm size suits a kitchen island, a breakfast bar, a bedside spot or a run of two or three lights along a hallway or staircase. Because it reads as bright and contemporary rather than rustic, it works well in newer builds, Scandinavian influenced schemes or any room that already leans white and pale timber.

Where Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection itself began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and started experimenting with leftover cardboard, eventually developing it into the layered, honeycombed shades the brand is now known for.
