A Handcrafted Hive in Warm Cardboard

The Graypants Scraplights Hive 12 is a ceiling pendant built by hand from layers of laser cut corrugated cardboard, pieced together into a rounded, tapering shade with a wide open base. In the Blonde finish, the cardboard keeps its own natural tone, so light glows warm and amber through the seams and throws a honeycombed lattice of shadow across nearby walls and ceilings. At 30cm diameter, it sits in the middle of the Hive range, small enough to hang solo above a side table and substantial enough to anchor a room when clustered.

The Blonde Finish

Blonde is the most natural of the Hive finishes. No stain or dye is added, so the cardboard reads as straw and honey coloured layers, ridged where each laser cut band meets the next. Because the shade is pieced together by hand, the exact pattern of ridges and seams varies slightly from one pendant to the next, so no two Hive 12 shades are quite identical. It sits comfortably with timber furniture, linen and rattan, and other warm, natural material palettes. Lit, it throws a golden glow. Unlit, it reads as a sculptural, textured object in its own right.

How It Works

The Hive 12 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, fitted with a single E27 socket that takes a 1 x 15W max E27 LED bulb, not supplied. Choose a compatible dimmable LED bulb if you want the fitting to dim. It hangs from a 2m white fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on request, and connects to a grey powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm high by 10cm diameter. Drop length is set by your electrician at installation, so it can be hung as high or low as your ceiling allows.

Where It Works Best

The Hive 12 suits living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways and stairwells, anywhere a warm accent light adds character rather than flooding a room with brightness. Hang one over a reading nook or bedside table, or group two or three at staggered heights above a dining table or stairwell for a cluster effect. It works well for anyone drawn to natural materials and handmade texture over a smooth, uniform finish.

The Story Behind Scraplights

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which includes the Hive range, began as an accident: the pair were experimenting with leftover cardboard for a sustainable design competition when the idea for a lit, laser cut cardboard shade first took shape.

• Each shade is hand assembled, so minor variation in the cut and the seams between pieces is normal and part of the material, not a fault.
• Due to the nature of this product, it is strictly non-returnable. Please get in touch if you would like to see the fittings or request a swatch sample before you order.
• Comes with a 2m white fabric cord as standard. A 5m cord is available, please enquire if you need the longer option.
• Bulb not included. Fit with a 1 x 15W max E27 LED bulb, and choose a dimmable LED if you want the option to dim.
• Keep in a normal dry indoor room. Cardboard is not suited to bathrooms or other damp, high humidity spaces.
• CE certified, with a 2 year warranty as standard.
