The Hewn 48 8 Linear Pendant is one of the longer fixtures in Graypants' Scraplights collection, built as a single continuous bar of light rather than a cluster of separate shades. It throws direct light straight down in an even band, so it reads as a clean architectural line over a table or counter rather than a decorative centrepiece. This is also a genuinely long fitting, with a shade that measures 121cm long, 20cm tall and 10cm wide, weighing 3.7kg, so it needs a run of ceiling and a table or worktop to match.

The White Finish

This version is finished in crisp white. Graypants knife cuts the recycled corrugated cardboard into panels, then hand assembles them over a slim exposed steel frame, so the white reads clean and graphic rather than papery. Because each panel is cut and built by hand, small natural variations from one fixture to the next are normal and part of the finish, not a flaw. The white cardboard and visible steel line pair easily with contemporary, Scandinavian and boutique hospitality interiors, and sit well against pale walls, timber tables and stone worktops.

How It Works

The pendant is hardwired and hangs on a 2m white fabric cord, with a 5m cord available on request if you need extra drop. It is fitted with a 23W integrated LED giving 3000 lumens at a warm 3000K colour temperature, so there is no bulb to source or change later. It is mains dimmable, so it can be wired to a compatible dimmer switch if you want to soften the light for evening use. The ceiling canopy is a small 3.5cm tall, 16cm diameter white powder coated steel disc that sits flush against the ceiling. The fixture carries CE certification and a 2 year warranty.

Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which this pendant belongs to, began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to build a lighting entry for a sustainable design competition. That original idea, cutting and layering waste cardboard into light fixtures, grew into the Scraplights range Graypants still makes today.
