The Hewn 48/8 Linear is Graypants' reclaimed cardboard construction stretched into a single directional run, built for the specific job of lighting a table, counter or desk from above rather than filling a room with ambient glow. This is a genuinely long fixture, running 121cm end to end, so it reads more as a piece of linear architecture than a single pendant point, and it is worth checking that length against your table, island or landing before ordering. In Blonde, the corrugated edges of the cardboard shade catch light along their fluted lines, giving off a warm honeyed glow rather than the deeper amber of the Natural finish.

The Blonde Finish

Blonde is Graypants' lighter cardboard tone, paler and more honeyed than the brand's deeper Natural finish. Each shade is laser cut and hand assembled from corrugated cardboard over a steel frame, so the fluted edge along the shorter 20cm profile stays visible rather than sanded smooth. It reads as warm honey coloured when lit, and a soft pale grey when off, and pairs well with oak, ash and other light timber furniture, white or putty walls, and natural materials like linen and undyed wool.

How It Works

The Hewn 48/8 is hardwired and fitted with a 23W integrated LED, producing 3000 lm at a warm 3000K colour temperature. It is mains dimmable, so it can be brought down low for evening use over the same table it lights for daytime tasks. Because this is a Direct light version, every lumen is aimed straight down. There is no upward spill to soften the ceiling, so it works best as deliberate task lighting rather than a room's main source of ambient light. It comes fitted with a 2m white fabric cord and a 16cm diameter white powder coated canopy, 3.5cm high. A 5m cord is available on request. As a hardwired pendant, professional installation is recommended.

How Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, of which the Hewn Linear is part, began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and built with leftover cardboard because it was what they had on hand. That material has stayed at the centre of the collection ever since.
