Knife Cut White Cardboard

Graypants build this shade from layers of recycled corrugated cardboard, knife cut into the ridged, stepped pattern the Hewn range is known for, then finished in white rather than left in its natural kraft brown tone. Up close, the cut lines still show as fine parallel grooves across the surface, so it reads as a textured, almost pleated material rather than a flat painted panel. It sits well against pale walls, plaster, oak and other light woods, and offers a quieter, more architectural alternative to the natural cardboard version of the same shape.

How It Works

Two light elements are built into the one shade: one shines down onto the table or counter beneath it, the other washes light up onto the ceiling. Both are wired together so a single dimmer controls the whole fixture.

From Packaging Offcuts to Considered Lighting

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range that this pendant belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and started experimenting with leftover cardboard rather than buying new material. That original idea, turning a packaging offcut into a finished light fixture, is still the starting point for every Scraplight Graypants makes today.
