A Linear Wash of Up and Down Light

This is the Hewn 48/8 in Natural, Graypants' largest linear Scraplights pendant, built for spaces that need scale as well as light. It is a genuinely large fixture, with a shade that runs 121cm long and stands 20cm tall, so it reads as a strong central piece over a dining table or island rather than a supplementary light. Unlike the Direct only version of the Hewn, which sends every lumen downward, this Direct/Indirect model adds a second, upward facing LED that washes the ceiling with a soft ambient glow alongside its task beam below. Both lights sit on a single circuit, so the whole fixture dims together from one switch.

Warm Natural Cardboard, Cut and Assembled by Hand

The shade is made from recycled corrugated cardboard, laser cut into a repeating pattern and assembled by hand over a steel frame. In the Natural finish, the cardboard is left in its own warm amber tone rather than dyed or painted, so the corrugation and the raw edges of the material stay visible. Lit, it throws the distinctive dappled shadow pattern that Scraplights are known for across the ceiling and walls. It sits comfortably with wood, brass, linen and other natural materials, and suits Scandinavian, Japandi or organic modern schemes where warmth and texture matter more than polish.

How It Works

• Light distribution: Direct/Indirect, with one LED facing down for task light over a table and one facing up for an ambient wash across the ceiling.
• Circuit: Single circuit wiring, so the up light and down light dim together on one standard mains dimmer.
• Light source: A 23W to 46W integrated LED, giving 3000 lm downlight and 3000 lm uplight at a warm 3000K colour temperature. The LED is integrated, so there is no separate bulb to buy or change.
• Fitting: Hardwired to the mains with a black powder coated ceiling canopy, 16cm in diameter and 3.5cm high. It comes on a 2m black fabric cord as standard; a 5m cord is available on request.
• Certification: CE certified for UK and EU use.

From a Competition Prototype to a Design Icon

The Scraplights line began as an accident. Graypants entered a sustainable design competition and built their first shade from leftover cardboard, and that piece became the starting point for the whole collection. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand has continued to work with reclaimed and recycled materials since.
