A Long, Glowing Cardboard Lattice for the Table

This is the Hewn Linear pendant from Graypants' Scraplights collection, in the palest of the range's cardboard finishes, Blonde. Hundreds of individually sliced strands of reclaimed corrugated cardboard are bonded into one long rectangular shade, so the surface reads almost like woven fabric once the LED inside is switched on. It is also a genuinely large fixture: 121cm long, 20cm high and 10cm deep, weighing 3.7kg, so it reads as a proper linear statement over a table rather than a single small pendant.

A Pale, Honey Toned Finish

Blonde is Graypants' lightest cardboard tone, a warm honey colour somewhere between raw kraft and pale timber. Every shade is hand cut and hand assembled from reclaimed board, so the exact grain and tone varies a little from strand to strand and piece to piece. It also looks noticeably different once lit, when the light picks out the layered edges and turns the whole form warm and glowing, compared with the drier, papery colour it shows unlit in daylight. Screens can render this pale finish slightly differently too, so treat any photo as a guide rather than an exact match. It pairs naturally with timber, rattan and other natural materials, and suits a Japandi scheme as easily as a warmer contemporary interior with darker wood or brass fittings nearby.

How It Works

The shade houses an integrated LED strip that throws light both down through the open base and up towards the ceiling, giving a mix of direct downlight and soft indirect wash from a single fixture.

• Light source: Integrated LED, 23 to 46W, running at a warm 3000K and putting out 3000 lumens downward and 3000 lumens upward.
• Dimming: Mains dimmable. The direct downlight and indirect uplight dim together through a single circuit connection, so it works with most existing dimmer switches without extra wiring.
• Fitting: Hardwired ceiling pendant, suspended on a 2m white fabric cord from a 16cm white powder coated canopy. A 5m cord is available on request.
• Certification and warranty: CE certified, with a 2 year warranty.

Where It Works Best

Its length suits a dining table, kitchen island or long console rather than a single central point, and the combined direct and indirect light means it can do the job of task lighting and ambient lighting at once. It works well in a dining room, or over a desk or meeting table in a home office where you want even light without a bare bulb look.

How Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection is said to have started almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned leftover cardboard packaging into a lighting fixture rather than throwing it away. That original idea, of reclaimed cardboard rather than new material, still runs through every Scraplights shade made today, including this one.
