A Long, Architectural Line of Cardboard

The Hewn 48/8 Linear Pendant is one of the longest fixtures in Graypants' Scraplights range, and in white it reads as a clean architectural line rather than a raw material statement. It throws light down onto whatever sits beneath it and up onto the ceiling at the same time, with the two directions wired on separate circuits so they can be balanced independently. This is also a genuinely long fixture, with a shade 121cm long and 20cm tall, so it is worth checking the space you have in mind before ordering.

The White Finish

This shade is corrugated cardboard, cut by hand and assembled in layers, then finished in white rather than left in its natural kraft tone. From a normal viewing distance it reads as a solid surface, almost like plaster. Up close, the fine cut lines and layered edges built up by hand are still visible. It sits on a steel frame, with white powder coated end fittings measuring 3.5cm high by 16cm across. White suits pale walls and ceilings, where the fixture sits as a considered architectural form rather than the more textural accent a natural cardboard finish would give.

How It Works

Light comes from an integrated LED module rated at 23 to 46W, producing around 3000 lumens down and a further 3000 lumens up, at a warm 3000K colour temperature. The down light and up light run on separate circuits, so a two gang dimmer switch lets you set a bright downlight for task use and a dimmed upward wash for ambience, or the reverse, rather than dimming the whole fixture as one. It is hardwired and hangs on a 2m white fabric cord as standard, with a 5m cord available on enquiry for taller ceilings. The fixture arrives fully assembled, ready to wire in with no work needed on site.

Where It Works Best

Its length suits anywhere long and horizontal: a kitchen island, a dining table, a run of desks in an office, or a reception counter. It works as well above a home dining table as it does in a hotel lobby or workspace, anywhere a single long pendant reads better than a cluster of smaller ones.

Where Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights line, which this pendant belongs to, began almost by accident, as an entry built from leftover cardboard for a sustainable design competition, and went on to become one of the studio's most recognised collections.
