A Sculptural Wash of Light, Cast From Cardboard

The Hewn Linear 48/8 is a long, linear pendant built from a lattice of laser cut cardboard, finished in Graypants' undyed Natural tone. At 121cm long and 20cm tall, it is sized to run the length of a kitchen island, dining table or hallway rather than sit as a single accent point. Two independent light circuits, one throwing light up and one down, let you shape a soft ceiling glow and a focused table light from the same fixture.

Natural Cardboard, Left Honest

This Natural finish leaves the recycled corrugated cardboard undyed and unpainted, so the raw fibre, cut edges and stacked layers of the lattice stay visible once the light is on. Each shade is laser cut then hand assembled, bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. The warm, paper toned surface and exposed structure sit well against timber, brass and other natural materials, and read as considered and handmade rather than mass produced.

How It Works

The Hewn Linear 48/8 runs on 23 to 46W of integrated LED, split across two independent circuits, one lighting upward through the top of the lattice and one down through the base, each rated at 3000 lm and a warm 3000K colour temperature. Both circuits are mains dimmable, so a two gang dimmer switch lets you dim the upward glow and the downward light separately. The fixture is hardwired, supplied on a 2m black fabric cord with a black powder coated canopy (a 5m cord is available on request), and needs professional installation.

Graypants, From Seattle

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, of which the Hewn Linear is part, began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition and found the material's texture and light qualities were worth pursuing on their own terms.
