A Long Run of Warm, Diffused Light
This is the Hewn 48/8 Direct/Indirect pendant in Blonde, an eight panel linear Scraplight built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard over a steel frame. It is also a genuinely large fixture, 121cm long and 20cm high, so it reads more like a piece of furniture suspended from the ceiling than a single pendant. Two independent LED circuits, one aimed down and one aimed up, let you dial in a working light and an ambient glow as two separate levels rather than one fixed brightness.
The Blonde Finish
Blonde is the palest of the Hewn finishes, keeping the corrugated cardboard close to its natural, honeyed colour rather than deepening it toward amber or charcoal. Every panel is laser cut from reclaimed cardboard, so the ridges of the corrugation stay visible and cast a soft, striped shadow pattern when the fixture is lit. Because it is a hand finished natural material, the exact grain and tone can vary a little from piece to piece. Blonde works well against pale oak, white walls and other light, Scandinavian feeling interiors, where the warm cardboard tone reads as a natural material rather than a strong colour statement.
How It Works
The shade houses an integrated LED system rated at 23W to 46W, run as two separate circuits: 3000 lm from the downlight and 3000 lm from the uplight, both at a warm 3000K colour temperature. Because the two circuits are wired independently, they can each be set to their own brightness from a two gang dimmer, so the downward task light and the upward ambient wash do not have to move together. The fixture is mains dimmable, hardwired, and carries CE safety certification with a 2 year warranty. It is supplied on a 2m white fabric cord with a 16cm diameter white powder coated ceiling canopy; a 5m cord is available on request. As an integrated LED fitting there are no bulbs to source or replace.
Where It Works Best
Its length makes this the fixture to run along a kitchen island or over a long dining table, where a single round pendant would leave the ends of the surface in shadow. The separately dimmable up and down light also suits a home office or a study desk, giving a brighter task light for work and a softer ambient setting for the evening. It is best suited to light, natural, uncluttered rooms where the cardboard texture and warm Blonde tone can read as a feature rather than compete with a busier scheme.
Where Scraplights Began
Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which this pendant belongs to, began almost by accident: at a sustainable design competition, the pair started building lighting from the leftover corrugated cardboard that other entrants were throwing away, and the material stuck as the studio's signature.
Good to Know
- Due to the handmade nature of this product, it is strictly non-returnable. Please get in touch with us if you would like to see the fittings in person or request a swatch sample before ordering.
- This is a large fitting at 121cm long and 20cm high, weighing 3.7 kg. Please check these measurements, and your ceiling's weight capacity, against your space before ordering.
- The corrugated cardboard shade should be kept dry and out of damp or steamy rooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth rather than wiping with water or cleaning sprays.
- Installation is hardwired and should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who will also need to wire the two circuits to a two gang dimmer if you want independent up and down light control.
- Screens render colour and tone differently, so the Blonde finish may look slightly warmer or cooler in person than on your display.
Questions People Ask
- How big is this pendant? The Hewn 48/8 shade measures 121cm long, 20cm high and 10cm wide, with a 16cm diameter ceiling canopy. Given its length, it is worth measuring your space before ordering.
- Can the up light and down light be controlled separately? Yes. The fixture is wired as two independent circuits, one for the downward task light and one for the upward ambient light, and each can be set to a different brightness from a two gang dimmer.
- What bulbs does it use? It has an integrated LED system rated at 23W to 46W, producing 3000 lm downlight and 3000 lm uplight at a warm 3000K colour temperature, so there are no separate bulbs to buy or replace.
- Can I return this if the finish is not what I expected? No. Because each shade is a handmade, hand finished piece, this product is non-returnable. We recommend requesting a swatch sample or asking to see the fittings before you order.
- What is the shade made from? Reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut and bonded over a steel frame, finished in Blonde to keep the cardboard's pale, honeyed tone.
