A Long, Low Line of Cardboard Light

The Hewn 48/4 is one of the longest fixtures in Graypants' Hewn Linear collection, a low slung bar of light built for spaces where a wide table or counter needs even coverage rather than a single pool of glow. This is a genuinely long fitting: 121cm long, 11cm high and 10cm wide, so it reads as an architectural line rather than a single pendant point. This Direct Light version, in the Natural finish, sends every bit of that light straight down, with none escaping upward into the room.

Raw, Unbleached Cardboard

This Natural finish is Graypants' cardboard left exactly as it comes off the laser cutter. Recycled corrugated board is cut into an intricate lattice, hand assembled, and left unbleached rather than stained or painted. The result is a warm, honey toned surface with visible ridges and layered edges, so the shade looks slightly different depending on the angle you view it from. It suits materials with the same raw, tactile feel: oak and ash furniture, linen, exposed brick or timber, anywhere a room leans Scandinavian, Japandi or organic modern rather than polished and formal.

How It Works

Light passes through the cardboard lattice and out through the open underside of the shade, so the fitting itself doubles as a diffuser and a shade in one.

• Light source: 23W integrated LED, producing around 3000 lumens at a warm 3000K colour temperature.
• Dimming: Mains dimmable, so it can be brought down for evening use with a compatible dimmer switch.
• Direction: Direct light only on this version. All of the light is cast downward through the lattice, so the ceiling above stays largely in shadow.
• Fitting: Hardwired ceiling pendant, supplied with a 2m black fabric cord and a black powder coated canopy measuring 3.5cm high by 16cm diameter. A 5m cord is available on request, please enquire before ordering.

Where It Works Best

Its length and strictly downward throw make it best suited to long dining tables, kitchen islands and breakfast bars, where even light along the whole surface matters more than a soft ambient wash. It works just as well above a reception desk or a long meeting table in an office, anywhere a horizontal run of light reads better than a single round pendant. At only 11cm high, it also suits rooms with lower ceilings where a deeper pendant would feel heavy.

From Cardboard Offcuts to a Seattle Design Studio

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, including this Hewn Linear pendant, began almost by accident: the pair built an early version out of leftover cardboard while working on a sustainable design competition, and the material stuck. Every Scraplight since has kept that same idea at its core, turning a packaging offcut into a considered light fitting rather than hiding it.
