The Hewn 48/12 is one of the largest pieces in Graypants' Hewn Linear collection, and this Direct Light version in White brings a crisper, more architectural edge to the brand's signature cardboard silhouette. It measures 121cm long and stands 30cm tall along its steel spine, so it reads as a genuine architectural statement over a table rather than a small accent piece. Instead of the laser cut edges used elsewhere in the range, the White finish is knife cut by hand, giving each corrugated layer a cleaner line while still letting light spill through the texture.

Where Blonde and Natural read warm and raw, this White finish is knife cut rather than laser cut, which sharpens the edges of the corrugated cardboard and gives the surface a calmer, more graphic look. The cardboard shade sits over a steel frame for strength, and the whole fixture is treated with a non toxic fire retardant. It suits contemporary, Scandinavian and boutique hotel interiors that want the handmade Scraplights texture without the amber cast of the original cardboard colour.

How It Works

This is a hardwired ceiling pendant fitted with a 23W integrated LED, producing 3000 lm at a warm 3000K colour temperature. Light in this Direct version is aimed straight down, so it suits task focused settings like a dining table, desk or reception counter rather than general room fill. The LED is mains dimmable, so it works with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the level down. The shade hangs on a 2m white fabric cord from a 3.5cm high, 16cm diameter white powder coated ceiling canopy (a 5m cord is available on request). The fitting carries CE certification and comes with a 2 year warranty from Graypants. Installation is hardwired, so it should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Where Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection itself started almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and began experimenting with leftover cardboard, the material that eventually became the brand's signature.
