A Bold Horizontal Band of Warm Light

The Hewn 48 12 Linear Pendant is one of the larger fittings in Graypants' Scraplights collection, and it is built to make a statement rather than blend in. In this Blonde finish, undyed corrugated cardboard filters an integrated LED into a warm, amber toned wash that falls straight down onto whatever sits beneath it. It is a genuinely large fixture, measuring 121cm long, 30cm tall and weighing 4.5kg, so it reads as a strong horizontal line across a table or island rather than a single pool of light overhead.

The Natural Grain of Undyed Cardboard

Blonde is the palest of the Hewn finishes, made from reclaimed corrugated cardboard left in its natural, undyed state. Each shade is hand assembled panel by panel over a steel frame in Graypants' studio, so the ridges, edges and slight variations in tone of the cardboard stay visible rather than being painted or stained over. The effect is warm and textural, closer to raw material than to a finished product, and it sits comfortably against light woods, linen, stone and other pale, natural surfaces.

How It Works

• The shade houses a 23W integrated LED, producing approximately 3000 lumens at a warm 3000K colour temperature.
• Light distribution is direct only. There is no up light on this version, just a focused, downward wash suited to task areas.
• The fitting is mains dimmable, so it will work with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to lower the light level.
• It is hardwired and suspended on a 2m white fabric cord (a 5m cord is available on request), with a white powder coated ceiling canopy measuring 3.5cm high and 16cm across.
• It carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty.

Where It Works Best

Because the light is aimed straight down, this pendant works best hung low over a surface it needs to illuminate directly, a dining table, a kitchen island, or a desk or workbench used for close, detailed tasks. Its horizontal shape and natural texture suit Scandinavian, Japandi and organic modern interiors, and it works well as a single strong statement rather than one of several scattered pendants in the same room.

From a Design Competition to a Studio Craft

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection is said to have begun almost by accident, when the pair built a lampshade from leftover cardboard for a sustainable design competition and found that the material's texture and light quality struck a chord. That original idea has grown into a full studio practice, with each Scraplights shade still hand assembled from reclaimed cardboard rather than moulded or mass produced.
