The Hewn 48/12 is one of the largest fittings in Graypants' Scraplights range, a rectangular pendant built from knife cut cardboard in a crisp White finish. It measures 121cm long, 30cm high and 10cm wide, and weighs 4.5kg, so it reads less like a single downlight and more like a sculpted bar of light running the length of a table or counter. Light comes from the same shade in two directions, down for task use and up for ambient wash, and the Single Circuit wiring keeps both dimming together rather than needing separate controls.

Crisp White Cardboard, Cut and Assembled by Hand

Each shade is corrugated cardboard, knife cut into fine strips and hand assembled over a frame, then finished in White instead of being left in its natural kraft tone. The result is a pale, almost woven texture that reads as architectural and calm rather than rustic, closer to plaster or paper than the amber cardboard most people picture when they hear "Scraplights". It suits spaces built around white walls, oak, and quiet materials, where a Natural or Blonde shade in the same range would add more warmth than you want.

How It Works

• Hardwired ceiling pendant, suspended on a 2m white fabric cord (a 5m cord is available, please enquire) with a white powder coated canopy measuring 3.5cm high and 16cm in diameter.
• Light source: 23 to 46W integrated LED, producing 3000 lumens downlight and 3000 lumens uplight at a warm 3000K, so there is no separate bulb to source or replace.
• Mains dimmable. The Single Circuit wiring keeps the downward and upward light on one dimmer, for control from a single switch rather than two.
• CE certified, with a 2 year warranty.

Its length makes it a natural fit over a dining table, a kitchen island, a boardroom table or a reception desk, anywhere a long low line of light reads better than a cluster of separate pendants. Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range that the Hewn belongs to began almost by accident, out of leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition rather than as a planned product line, and it has grown into the studio's best known body of work.
