The Tallest Light in the Hewn Linear Collection
This is the biggest option in Graypants' Hewn Linear series, and it earns that spot with a genuinely large silhouette: 121cm long and 30cm tall, with a shade footprint of 10cm in width. It is a laser cut cardboard lattice built over a steel frame, designed to hang low over a long dining table or a bar run and hold its own there. Because it runs both a downlight and an uplight from one circuit, a single dimmer switch controls the whole effect, up and down together.
A Natural, Unbleached Cardboard Finish
The shade is reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut into Graypants' signature lattice pattern and assembled by hand. The Natural finish is left unbleached, so the material's own colour, grain and corrugation show through rather than being painted or dyed over. As with any natural material, tone can vary a little from piece to piece, and cardboard also looks different lit than unlit, warm and glowing at night, more textural and paper like by day. It pairs well with black powder coated hardware, exposed steel, timber and other honest, unfinished materials rather than anything glossy or high shine.
How It Works
Inside the cardboard lattice sits an integrated LED engine rated at 23 to 46W, putting out 3000 lm of downlight and 3000 lm of uplight at a warm 3000K colour temperature. Both directions run on a single circuit, so they dim together on one mains dimmer rather than needing separate switching. The fixture is hardwired, hanging on a 2m black fabric cord from a black powder coated canopy measuring 3.5cm high by 16cm in diameter (a 5m cord is available on request). It carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty.
Where It Works Best
Its length and presence suit it to spaces built around a long horizontal run: over a dining table, along a kitchen island, above a bar or a hotel reception desk. The soft upward glow also makes it a good fit for rooms with dark or high ceilings that need some bounced light as well as task light below. It's a natural fit for open plan kitchens, dining rooms, and boutique hospitality interiors with a warm, handmade feel.
The Story Behind Scraplights
Graypants' Scraplights collection began almost by accident. Entering a sustainable design competition, the team built a light from leftover cardboard, and the shape it took on became the starting point for the whole Scraplights range. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the company has designed from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam since.
Good to Know
- This is a large fitting: 121cm long and 30cm tall, weighing 4.5kg. Please check these measurements, and your ceiling's weight capacity, against your space before ordering.
- Colour and texture on the natural cardboard finish can vary slightly piece to piece, and it will read differently lit at night versus in daylight. Screens also render colour differently from device to device, so if you're ever unsure, call Moonlight customer service before ordering.
- The shade is laser cut and hand assembled to order, so please check current lead times with Moonlight before you buy.
- This item is non-returnable due to its handmade nature. If you'd like to see the fittings in person or request a swatch first, just ask the Moonlight team.
- Keep it dry and indoors, and dust the cardboard shade gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid damp cloths or cleaning sprays on the shade itself.
- Wired for a single circuit and one dimmer switch; a qualified electrician should handle installation as with any hardwired pendant.
Questions People Ask
- How big is the Hewn 48 - 12 pendant? It measures 121cm long and 30cm tall, with a 10cm deep shade, and weighs 4.5kg. It hangs on a 2m black fabric cord from a 3.5cm high, 16cm diameter black powder coated canopy (a 5m cord is available on request), so it's worth checking this against your ceiling height and space before ordering.
- Is this pendant dimmable? Yes. It runs an integrated LED rated at 23 to 46W on a single circuit, so the downlight and uplight dim together on one standard mains dimmer switch.
- What's the difference between the direct and indirect light? The downlight shines through the cardboard lattice onto the table or surface below, while the uplight bounces off the ceiling for ambient light. Both run from the same circuit and light up together.
- What is the shade made from? Reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut into Graypants' signature lattice pattern and assembled by hand, left in its natural, unbleached tone.
- Can I return this if I don't like it once it arrives? No. Due to its handmade nature this pendant is non-returnable, so it's worth asking Moonlight for a swatch or to see the fittings in person before you order.
