Light Cast Up and Down, on a Single Dimmer

The Hewn 48 12 Linear Pendant is usually built to send its light one way. This direct/indirect version does both at once, filtering an integrated LED down onto a table or worktop while a second light washes the ceiling above, with the two wired together on a single circuit so they switch and dim as one. It is also a genuinely large fixture, 121cm long, 30cm tall and 4.5kg, built in Graypants' lightest Blonde cardboard finish, which lets the material's own colour come through undyed.

Blonde is Graypants' lightest finish, the cardboard's own honeyed tone with nothing stained or painted over it. The shade is built from layers of reclaimed corrugated cardboard set inside a steel frame, so the ridged edges and papery texture of the material stay visible even once the light is on. It suits pale oak, rattan, linen and other warm, natural materials, and sits comfortably in a Japandi, organic modern or biophilic scheme where texture matters as much as light.

How It Works

• Light source: 23 to 46W integrated LED, split between a downlight and an uplight rated 3000 lumens each, both at a warm 3000K colour temperature.
• Circuit: Both directions run on a single circuit, so they switch and dim together from one standard dimmer rather than needing separate controls.
• Dimming: Mains dimmable, with a compatible dimmer switch.
• Fitting: Hardwired on a 2m white fabric cord (a 5m cord is available, please enquire), suspended from a round canopy 16cm in diameter and 3.5cm high, finished in white powder coat.
• Installation: As a hardwired fitting, it should be connected by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Its length and dual direction light make it well suited to a long dining table or kitchen island, where the downlight can do the work of lighting the surface while the uplight softens the ceiling above. It also works well over a desk or in a home office, giving task light down and a gentler ambient wash up at the same time, so the room does not feel lit from one hard source.

Graypants, Seattle to Amsterdam

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection this pendant belongs to began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to enter a sustainable design competition and found the material held light and cast shadow in a way worth developing properly. That original idea is still what the Hewn 48 is built from today, made across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.

• Handmade variation: As a raw cardboard material, tone can vary slightly piece to piece, and colour can also read differently on screen depending on your device.

• Can I control the up light and down light separately? No. Both directions are wired together on a single circuit, so they switch on and dim together from one dimmer rather than needing separate controls.
• Is this pendant dimmable? Yes. It is mains dimmable, so it can be used with a compatible dimmer switch.
• Does it come with a bulb? No separate bulb is needed. It uses integrated LED light engines built into the fixture, rated at 3000 lumens downlight and 3000 lumens uplight, both at 3000K.
