The Hewn 48 12 Linear Pendant in White throws light down onto the surface below and up onto the ceiling at the same time, with the two directions wired to separate circuits so each can be dimmed on its own. A Crisp White Finish on a Sculptural Shade

Graypants builds the Hewn Linear shade from layers of corrugated cardboard, knife cut to create the fixture's ridged texture, then finishes this piece in white rather than leaving the cardboard in its natural tone. The white coating smooths over the material's usual warmth and lets the cut lines read as pattern and shadow instead of raw material. It sits inside a steel frame, and pairs well with pale oak, plaster and matt white joinery, or with black and brass fittings for contrast.

How It Works

The pendant is hardwired on a suspension cord, with a 2m white fabric cord fitted as standard (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire). A powder coated canopy, 3.5cm tall and 16cm across, sits flush to the ceiling. Inside, an integrated LED module of 23 to 46W puts out 3000 lm downward and a further 3000 lm upward, both at a warm 3000K colour temperature. The fixture is mains dimmable, and because the up light and down light run on separate circuits, you will need a two gang dimmer switch, or two single dimmer circuits, to control them independently. It carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty.

Graypants, and the Story Behind Scraplights

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, which this pendant belongs to, began as an accident: the pair were experimenting with leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition, and the material stuck. It has been part of Graypants' collection ever since.
