Two Lights, One Fixture, Full Control
The Hewn 48/12 Direct/Indirect is the most adjustable cardboard pendant light in Graypants' Hewn Linear range. Its up light and down light are wired on separate dual circuits, so each can be dimmed independently from a two gang dimmer, brighter below for a dining table, softer above for a general glow, or any balance in between. It is also one of the larger fixtures in the range, at 121cm long, 30cm high and 4.5kg in weight, so it reads as a genuine centrepiece rather than a discreet accent light.
The Natural Amber Finish
This Natural version keeps the cardboard's own colour rather than adding a stain or paint, so the finish reads as a deep, warm amber whether the pendant is lit or switched off. The shade is laser cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, hand assembled around a steel armature and bonded with non toxic adhesive, and the layered edges of cut card throw a soft, ribbed shadow pattern onto the wall or ceiling around it once the LEDs are on. Because each shade is cut and built by hand, small variations in grain and tone between pieces are part of the material rather than a flaw.
How It Works
The Hewn 48/12 Direct/Indirect sends light both up and down from the same fixture, downward for task light onto a table or worktop below, upward for a softer ambient wash across the ceiling. Because the two directions run on separate dual circuits, they can be dimmed independently, as long as the pendant is wired to a two gang dimmer switch. The LED light source is integrated into the fixture at 23 to 46W combined, so there is no bulb to buy or replace, and it is mains dimmable at a 3000K colour temperature throughout. It comes hardwired on a 2m black fabric cord and canopy, ready for a qualified electrician to install, and carries a 2 year warranty and CE safety certification.
Where It Works Best
Its scale and adjustable light make it a natural fit above a dining table, where the downward circuit can be turned up for the table itself and the upward circuit dimmed low once the meal is done. It suits a Scandinavian or organic modern dining room, but also works well in an office or hospitality space that wants a considered centrepiece with layered light rather than one fixed output.
The Story Behind Graypants Scraplights
Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range they are best known for began almost by accident, born out of leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition, and grew into the laser cut, hand assembled lighting collection the Hewn Linear pendants belong to today.
Good to Know
- This is a large fixture: 121cm long, 30cm high and 4.5kg in weight. Check these measurements, and your ceiling's weight capacity, against your space before ordering.
- As each shade is hand cut and assembled from reclaimed cardboard, colour and grain vary slightly piece to piece, and screens can render the amber tone differently to how it looks in person.
- This pendant is strictly non-returnable due to its handmade nature. Please ask Moonlight if you would like to see the fittings in person or receive a swatch of the Natural finish before ordering.
- Comes on a 2m black fabric cord as standard. A 5m cord is available on request, please enquire.
- Keep away from damp or steam as the shade is cardboard; not suitable for bathrooms or other high moisture rooms.
- This is a hardwired fitting and needs a two gang dimmer switch to use the independent up and down dimming; installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
- If you are ever unsure about the exact size or colour before ordering, Moonlight's customer service team is happy to help, just get in touch.
Questions People Ask
- How big is this pendant? The Hewn 48/12 Direct/Indirect pendant measures 121cm long, 30cm high and 10cm wide, and weighs 4.5kg fully assembled. As one of the larger fixtures in the Hewn Linear range, check these measurements and your ceiling's weight capacity against your space before ordering.
- Can the up light and down light be controlled separately? Yes. The Hewn 48/12 Direct/Indirect is wired on dual circuits, so the upward and downward LEDs can each be dimmed independently from a two gang dimmer switch.
- What light source does this pendant use? It has an integrated LED light source rated between 23W and 46W, producing around 3000 lumens downlight and 3000 lumens uplight at a warm 3000K colour temperature. There is no bulb to replace.
- Can I return this pendant if I change my mind? No. Because each Hewn shade is hand assembled from reclaimed cardboard, this pendant is sold as strictly non-returnable. Moonlight can arrange a swatch of the Natural finish or a viewing of the fittings before you order if you would like to check first.
- Will my pendant look exactly like the product photo? Very close, but not identical. Because each shade is hand cut and assembled from reclaimed cardboard, small variations in grain and tone are normal, and screens can render the amber colour slightly differently to how it looks in person.
