A Cleaner, Brighter Glow from the Same Drum Shape

The Drum 24 in White takes Graypants' familiar cardboard drum shade and swaps the material's natural amber tone for a crisp white finish, then fits a glass diffuser inside the shade to spread the light evenly rather than letting it pool through the cardboard's ridges. At 61cm in diameter, it is the mid size Drum in the range, big enough to read as a proper pendant over a table or island without the scale of the largest Drum 36.

White Cardboard, Diffused Light

Each shade is knife cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, hand assembled and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive, then treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. In White, the cardboard is finished in a clean, opaque white rather than left in its natural tone, so the drum reads as a pale, sculptural object by day and casts a bright, even wash of light once switched on, helped by the glass diffuser fitted inside. It suits pale, contemporary and Japandi rooms, and pairs well with white or pale oak furniture, brushed steel and other light, cool toned materials.

How It Works

The glass diffuser fitted inside the shade softens and evens out the light from the bulbs, rather than letting it show through the cardboard's ridges as a lattice of shadow, the effect you get with Graypants' natural finishes. It takes three E27 bulbs, up to 15W LED each, which are not supplied. Fit dimmable LED bulbs and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings. The pendant is hardwired to the ceiling on a 2m white fabric cord with a small round canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, white powder coated. A 5m cord is available on request. As a hardwired fitting, it should be installed by a qualified electrician, who will also set the drop to suit your ceiling height.

Where It Works Best

Its brighter, more even glow suits rooms that want atmosphere without the warm amber cast of natural cardboard: a pale dining room or kitchen island, a bedroom that wants a soft, calm light rather than a moody one, or a hallway or stairwell that needs proper illumination as well as character. Hung singly, it works as a considered centrepiece over a table. Hung as a pair either side of a sofa or bed, it reads as a considered, symmetrical statement in an open plan living space.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered, cut cardboard could hold and filter light in a way few other materials do. The Drum, including this White version, is still built on that original idea, made across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
