The Drop 26 is the bigger of Graypants' two teardrop shaped Scraplights, an elongated shade that tapers from a wide crown to a narrow base. In the Natural finish, the shade measures 65cm tall and 36cm in diameter, so it reads as a genuine presence in a room rather than a small accent. Built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, it takes the raw, layered texture Scraplights are known for and stretches it into a taller, more sculptural silhouette.

Raw Cardboard, True to Its Texture

Natural is Graypants' most unaltered finish, the cardboard left exactly as it comes, with no added stain, dye or colour treatment. Every ring is laser cut from reclaimed corrugated board, then hand assembled and bonded with non-toxic adhesive before the whole shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. Because the rings are put together by hand, no two Drop 26 shades are ever quite identical. Lit, it glows a deep amber and throws an intricate lattice of shadow that shifts through the evening; unlit, it reads as raw, textured cardboard rather than a finished, coloured object.

How It Works

The Drop 26 is a hardwired pendant, supplied on a 2m black fabric cord with a small round canopy at the ceiling (2.5cm high, 10cm in diameter, black powder coated). A 5m cord is available if you need extra drop, just ask us to enquire on your behalf. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings. This pendant is CE certified and carries a 2 year warranty. Have a qualified electrician handle the install, since the drop height is set on site rather than pre fixed.

Where It Works Best

Because of its height and its shadow casting glow, the Drop 26 works best somewhere it has room to hang properly, a dining table, a kitchen island, or a stairwell where the extra drop can be seen from more than one level. It also suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways looking for one striking pendant rather than a row of downlights. In its raw Natural tone, it pairs particularly well with light oak, linen, rattan and other natural materials, and works alongside brass or bronze fittings. Given its scale, it tends to work best as a single statement piece rather than clustered in twos or threes.

The Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and turned to leftover cardboard as their material, discovering that layered, laser cut rings could filter light in a way few other materials do. The Natural finish keeps that idea in its purest form, since it is simply the cardboard as it comes, left unstained.
