A Compact Amber Glow in Reclaimed Cardboard

The Drop 18 is the smaller companion to Graypants' Drop 26, scaled down to a 25cm diameter shade that suits close, intimate spots rather than a big statement space. Built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard in the pale Blonde tone, it keeps the same teardrop profile as the rest of the Scraplights family, just sized for a bedside table, a narrow hallway, or a small dining setting.

The Blonde Finish

Blonde is the lightest of the Scraplights tones, close to the natural colour of the cardboard itself. Graypants laser cuts each ring individually, then hand assembles and bonds the layers with non-toxic adhesive before treating the finished shade with a non-toxic fire retardant. The result is a pale, papery texture with visible ridges and shadow lines, a good match for light woods, linen, and other warm neutral finishes rather than darker, moodier rooms.

How It Works

The Drop 18 is supplied as a hardwired ceiling pendant on a 2m white fabric cord (a 5m cord is available on enquiry), finished with a round white powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm high and 10cm across. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not included. Fit it with a dimmable LED bulb on a compatible dimmer switch and the light can be dimmed that way; the fixture itself has no built in dimmer. Lit, the cardboard shade glows amber and throws soft shadow patterns onto nearby walls and ceilings.

Where It Works Best

Its small scale makes the Drop 18 easy to use in pairs either side of a bed, above a small dining table, or clustered at staggered heights over a breakfast bar or landing. It also works well on its own in a hallway, stairwell, or reading nook, anywhere a single warm pool of light is more useful than a wide spread.

Where Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection started almost by accident, when leftover cardboard from a sustainable design competition was pressed into service as a lighting material and turned out to work far better than anyone expected. That original piece of improvisation is still the basis for every Scraplights shade the studio makes today, including the Drop 18.
