The Dome 36 is the biggest hemisphere Graypants makes in its Scraplights range, and in this Natural finish it stays true to the material it is built from. The shade is hand assembled from laser cut rings of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, left in its raw kraft tone rather than dyed or painted. It measures 50cm in height and 92cm in diameter, and weighs 9.5kg, so it reads as a genuine architectural piece rather than a simple pendant. Lit, three bulbs glow warm through the layered cardboard, scattering intricate shadow lines across the ceiling and walls around it.

Raw Kraft Cardboard, Left Honest

Natural is Graypants' rawest finish for the Dome, the cardboard's own kraft brown left exactly as it comes, with every ring edge and fibre still visible. It is warmer and more textured than a painted or stained shade, and it changes character through the day, reading as a quiet sculptural object unlit and a warm glowing hemisphere once switched on. It suits oak, rattan, linen and other natural materials, and pairs well with brass, bronze or blackened steel fittings nearby. Because each shade is hand assembled from individual rings, no two Dome 36 pendants are ever quite identical, and the kraft tone can also read slightly differently from screen to screen.

How It Works

Inside the shade sits a glass diffuser, which softens the light before it passes out through the layered cardboard. The Dome 36 takes three E27 lamp holders, each rated up to 15W LED, and bulbs are not supplied, so you will need to add three before it can be switched on. Fit dimmable LED bulbs with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down for evenings. The fixture is hardwired, suspended on a 2m black fabric cord from a small round canopy finished in black powder coated steel, and the drop is set on site when it is installed. As with any hardwired fitting, installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Given its scale, the Dome 36 works best somewhere with real volume to fill: an entrance hall, an open plan living or dining space, a stairwell with height to spare, or a boutique hotel or restaurant lobby. The Scraplights Story

The Scraplights collection began almost by accident. While entering a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started working with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery grew into the whole Scraplights range the Dome 36 belongs to. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
